Compassionate Allowance Program Gives Fast Aid to Those In Need

When someone becomes injured and can no longer seek or enjoy gainful employment, they may have the option to file for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. These benefits provide basic financial coverage for day-to-day expenses and necessities but sometimes it can take a considerably amount of time for those benefits to get approved. This is especially true if someone attempts to navigate the system without the help of a professional SSDI representative.

While a wait might not be ideal for anyone, most people are not completely inconvenienced by it. But for others, waiting is simply not an option and they need their benefits right away. In such a situation, they may qualify for the Compassionate Allowance Program, sometimes called the CAL program.

The CAL program created a list of more than 100 diseases and conditions that “obviously impair” someone without much medical study or diagnosis. In other terms, it lets Social Security recognize the severity of someone’s condition and expedite the process of their filing, putting them at the front of the line, so to speak. This is not a separate program from Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income but just a different way to go about getting the same benefits.

Some examples of conditions and diseases that can qualify someone in the CAL program are:

  • Acute leukemia
  • Early-onset Alzheimer’s disease
  • Certain forms of cancer (brain, liver, pancreatic, etc.)
  • Spinal muscular atrophy

The CAL program is under constant revision and review. If you suffer from a condition that is not on the list of Compassionate Allowance Conditions, it could be added in the near future, or after reviewing your own case. You should not automatically assume that you do not qualify and should always let an representative handle your case to get you as much help as possible and as soon as possible.
