What You Need to Know Before Applying for SSD Benefits

What You Need to Know Before Applying for SSD Benefits

Posted By Disability Action Advocates || 6-Nov-2015

Despite all of the technological advances that roll through every year, many people in all walks of life face considerable danger when performing their day-to-day duties at their workplace. From retail clerks climbing rickety stairs to put away freight to construction workers operating heavy machinery, everyone needs to be careful and safe at all times. If not, serious on-the-job injuries may occur, which should have otherwise been preventable.

If you have found yourself in a similar situation and now need assistance supporting yourself and your family, Social Security Disability (SSD, or SSDI) benefits may be able to help you. Before you apply, though, there are a few things you should know:

  • One year or more: Your injury, condition, or affliction must be severe enough to keep you from working for at least one full year.
  • No need to wait: Despite your condition needing to take you off your feet for at least a year, you do not need to wait that long to apply. A medical professional can assess your health and determine if a full recovery within a year is even a realistic possibility.
  • Speaking of doctors…: Get the medical attention that you need when you need it. Sometimes an employer may discourage a wounded employee from going to the doctor, out of fear of retaliation or increased insurance prices for their company. They do not have the right to prevent you from using medical service, though.
  • Make it appealing: SSDI covers millions of Americans, and claims come in all the time from all around the country. If your initial application is denied, perhaps lost in the confusion of the massive system, do not panic. You can file an appeal to have it reviewed again. With proper preparation, you may be able to secure benefits the second time around.
  • Form a team: Going through the motions with Social Security Disability is not something you are recommended to take on alone. Working closely with a reputable attorney may dramatically increase your chances of approval, and ultimately grant you a more comfortable recovery.
