Veterans Disability Processing Expedited by the Social Security Administration

Beginning in March of 2014, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has sought to expedite the processing of Social Security Disability claims for veterans who have a 100% Permanent and Total (P&T) compensation rating with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Veterans can receive disability from both the SSA and the VA as long as they meet certain qualifications. These qualifications are different for each department, however. This means that veterans with 100% P&T do not automatically qualify to receive Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits, as well, because they must meet the qualifications for both forms of disability benefits.

The requirements for SSD benefits are as follows:

  • You must have a severe impairment that is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death
  • Your impairment must be so that you are unable to perform any substantial work

Keep in mind that receiving VA benefits does not affect your ability to receive SSD benefits.

How will my SSD claim be expedited?

Once the SSA has established that you are a wounded veteran with 100% P&T, the SSA will treat your claim as a high-priority case, speeding up the application process in their field offices and the Nevada Office of Disability Determination Services. There are a number of factors involved, so it is not possible to determine the exact length of time that your case will take. However, you can rest assured that your case will move much faster than a regular SSD claim.

To make sure that your case moves as quickly as possible, visit your doctor and receive a medical examination so that you can provide solid medical evidence to support your claim. By providing medical documentation that establishes the nature of your disability, you are less likely to run into problems that slow down your Social Security Disability claim process.
